Ma.gnolia is a social bookmarking site.
Ma.gnolia entered the social bookmarking scene in 2006. The site allows you to store your bookmarks online and choose whether you want them viewable only through your account. You can import existing bookmarks from other social bookmarking websites or from your computer-based internet browsers. The system for adding bookmarks is entirely web based, and there doesn't appear to be a browser plug-in that allows you to add sites directly to your Ma.gnolia account while you are browsing the internet. Ma.gnolia claims to store a copy of the web page you bookmarked from the time you added it, to make sure that you never lose the exact copy of the page you bookmarked. However, when we tried to view the stored copies of our bookmarks we were presented with blank pages. Obviously the site is not yet working as it should be. The sorting of your bookmarks is also pretty basic, as there doesn't seem to be many options for viewing your bookmarks. You can also search through other users' tagged bookmarks (although this process is very slow) and add other users to your contact list. In February 2009 suffered an extensive data loss. All bookmarks from users were lost. Ma.gnolia was not able to restore most of the data and the site was closed.
Ma.gnolia is one of many social bookmarking websites out there, and differentiates itself through the use of a very pleasant look and feel, along with the ability to login using login details from other sites.
Ma.gnolia has a very pleasant look and feel with soothing pastel colors. The navigation is simple, with compact, drop-down menus being used.
Ma.gnolia, besides having a very odd web address, also has a very odd registration process. It is not actually possible to register an account at Ma.gnolia itself, as it makes use of your registration details at other websites, such as Yahoo! or Facebook. If you don't already have an account at one of these sites, then you won't be able to login at Ma.gnolia, as they don't offer their own registration service. If you do already have an account at one of the other websites, then logging in is a breeze. You will be required to verify your e-mail address, but you are able to use the site before doing this.
Ma.gnolia is a free service, funded by advertising, but like all social bookmarking services, you can be sure that your favorite bookmarks will be used to target you with specialty advertising.
While not the most fully featured social bookmarking website out there, Ma.gnolia does its job well and the pleasing look and feel might sway you. And if you already happen to have a Facebook or a Yahoo! account, amongst others, then you won't need to register.
